Residential Furniture Care

Amazing Indoors

How to care for your residential furniture:

The directions for putting together your stools is in every box.

First Tip- Pad the surface you will be working on. Identify your parts and know where they go

Put together all your parts loosely then slide in the braces and stretcher making sure that the notches in the front of the stool are at the same level which is lower than the sides. ALSO MAKE SURE the screw holes all point to the bottom of the stool

Just before placing the stretcher and braces put some glue into the notch paint it with a light coat of glue and put some on the extension of the braces and stretchers to create a bond. Have a damp towel to clean up any excess that should squish out of place. WE ALWAYS SUGGEST USING A WOOD GLUE IT IS JUST ONE MORE THING TO DO SO THAT YOUR PIECES CAN LIVE UP TO EXPECTED LEVELS

While the glue is still wet, and before you screw the braces and stretchers, level up you back of your stool and the front legs on your floor. Stand it up if it does not rock spend some time to hand tighten the front legs and the bolts at the back of the stool.

Flip it over, then hand tighten using tools. Place screws while its upside down.

Determine if you would prefer to keep plastic bumpers (THESE CAN SCRATCH CERTAIN FLOORINGS), on the stools or use some Feltac if you are concerned about flooring. Remove the plastic if you are using Feltac

Table and Chair sets When you have a dark coloured table top soft placemats and runners are strongly advised as the darker stains will tend to show scratched more readily than a lighter coloured table top Wooden chairs and table legs take a lot of abuse and when used on a daily basis the screws and or bolts may loosen or the stretchers of the chair (horizontal pieces of wood that join the legs) may begin to move. Even when the chair is seldom used, wood will often shrink as it ages and over time the glue can harden and no longer adhere correctly. You will notice as humidity rises and falls this will causes changes in tightness of both screws and bolts. Solid Wood Table tops will shrink it is the nature of wood to shrink and expand and this is not a warrantable issue.  Mark on your calendar twice a month to check and hand tightened, not over tightened to reduce wobble and potential damage to your pieces. We recommend that with a few simple tools it is often possible to tighten the chair to ensure safety. If the table has a leaf or leaves it is recommended that table are opened up to full extension to ensure things are moving smoothly and that there is a consistent colouration in your table top and leaves.

Cleaning a table or wood piece can be done with a damp not wet rag. Clean lightly every day and condition once a week with conditioner inside and outside and underside of the pieces. Using this conditioner may help you to retain the consistent color conditioning will also assist in holding in the humidity that when it is low will cause shrinkage so apply above and below the surfaces. We strongly suggest with changes in humidity that the is an increase in conditioning the wood. Let it sit over night then buff lightly with a soft clean cloth.

Use your vertical tipping restraint devices located on the back of your pieces.

Upholstery with bayonet backs:

The backs of all reclining upholstery with removable backs are called bayonet backs. They take a lot of strain under any circumstance and require having their guides tightened on a regular basis. Please ask staff how to remove to tighten these pieces so that you are not disappointed in your pieces.

Remove the back and use a household tool to tighten the guides, replace the guides onto the bayonet from the seat portion of the piece.

All power pieces require a surge protector so they do not blow transformers in your recliner. Transformers have small wiring and require the regulation of the power through a surge protector.

Leather is required to be cleaned and conditioned to extend its life. Natural body oils can cause colour distortion as well as hide break down. Clean up stains right away with a damp cloth not wet. Use a cleaner once a week and a conditioner every month to give it UV protection and moisture within the hide. Avoid placement of leather in direct sunlight or over heating registers.

Upholstery legs should be hand tightened or use a tool designed to tighten on a regular basis

Cold Weather Travel with your Furniture;

At home, increase your humidity to 22% this is to keep wood and leather at an optimum condition.

When bringing any new piece(s) in the home under cooler weather conditions it is imperative to let the furniture pieces warm up prior to set up. Suggestions would be to store in a heated garage or your home for 12-24 hours. It will be necessary to open the boxes up as most pieces have Styrofoam (an insolating material) surrounding it, this will slow the warm up process.

The reasoning is that product becomes brittle in the cold, things can crack and break.

If you are taking home leather do not sit on it for the 12-24 hours to let the hide and the frame warm.
